More Tips and Techniques

The Facebook Live Tips & Techniques will be happening this week. They plan to continue it the first week of each month! I’ve been able to catch some live and go back to see the replays. Did you know there is a Facebook page for this? Check it out on Designer Virtual Shows.

The list for this week will be below.  I’ll be presenting on Thursday at NOON Eastern.  I hope you can join me!  I had intended to get this out early this AM, as the first designer was at noon.  I’ll post my Two Tips later tonight.

Two Tip Tuesday – Pattern followup and guilds

Thank you all for your comments on my pattern questions! I also had several by email. I appreciate your feedback and value your opinions.  I realized I didn’t give the best description for option A, the “regular” pattern size.  An 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper folded in half that fits in a 6″ x 9″ plastic sleeve.  I bet you understood anyway 😉

I will be taking part in the Global Quilt Connection presentations for guilds on Sept. 2nd.  If you are a guild looking for a speaker this is a great way to see a number of teachers in a couple hours.  You can register on the website.  Global Quilt Connection.  There has already been one afternoon of 30 teachers with two more presentation days planned.  I love the logo!

I hope to “see” some of you from 4-6pm on  Sept. 2nd.  We have 3 minutes to tell you about ourselves and programs.  (I may have to talk fast!  Seriously, I love to tell stories about my quilting adventures.) This virtual new world of presentation is amazing.  There is limited space on the Zoom call but extras can watch via YouTube at the same time.  I would love to speak at your guild.  Even virtually, since most guilds are not meeting in person.  I have a list of my most popular lecture/trunk shows on my website.  Check them out by clicking on the words above!

Are you in a quilt guild?  Who are your quilting buddies?  I’m in two guilds, same local area.  There are only a few of us that belong to both.  I love meeting with other quilters to sit and stitch.  With all this staying at home, I really miss our outings/gatherings.  I have taught on the Zoom platform and will be putting up classes in the next couple weeks.  If you have a request for a class, be sure to email me or post in the comments.  It doesn’t matter how far away you live, virtual classes come directly to you over your computer/tablet/phone!

#1 – Take a class!  You can learn a new technique, play with a new design, or hang out with new/old quilting friends!  Do you know someone who wants to learn to quilt?  Encourage them to join in, I love teaching all levels.

#2 – Join in the Around the Block – US Tour.  It is a great way to meet new quilt designers and get some wonderful free patterns!

Around the Block – US Tour – Week 4

We are in week 4 of the Around the Block – US Tour. Go Always Expect More for her California block. Click on California to get Carolina Moore’s block and post.
A side note. Many of the designers have chosen to give you their FREE block through their newsletters. You can always unsubscribe once you get the blocks. Or stay in the loop. It is fun to see what they are all doing!

Two Tip Tuesday – Patterns/Booklets

How do your patterns grow?? I’ve been writing some new patterns and I’m going to turn the tables and ask you for your tips for me…
How do you prefer patterns?

Brilliant Bundle

A – In a single regular size pattern (5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ regular paper size, folded in half in a plastic sleeve).  My “Tool” and “Brilliant” patterns are this format.

“By The Number” Patterns.

B – Smaller size, like my BTN patterns.  These are a single page, tri-fold to approximately 4″ x 5″, no plastic sleeve (or would you want this size in a plastic sleeve?)  Yes, we folded them a bit different.  Small size packed with steps and diagrams, fewer words.

C – Small size single sheet of paper folded twice.  They would be placed in a plastic sleeve.

D – Booklet, sturdy cover with full sheet instructions stapled into a booklet.

E – Small Booklet, sturdy cover with half sheet instructions stapled into a booklet, this is like my Hex-a-ma-jig and Hex-a-ma-jig Jr. instruction booklet.

F – PDF file to be downloaded by you and printed on your home printer.  This format would be full sheet format like option A.

Yes, I’m seriously asking and really curious!  What format do you go for?  Do you like one quilt per pattern or prefer a booklet with several different patterns?

Do you save the plastic sleeve and keep your patterns in their original form?  Or do you take them out and pitch the sleeve?

Please leave your comments below.  If you are not comfortable using the comments to answer, please email me!

In thinking about storing patterns, a couple tips…

#1 – I store my purchased patterns in baskets on a shelf in my studio.  Yes, in their original plastic sleeve.

#2 – A friend takes everything out of the sleeve and puts in a three ring notebook in their own separate sleeve protector.  Great idea Shinae!

And… I’m really missing Grand Rapids this week!  I love that show!  I look forward to when we can be together at shows again.

Two Tip Tuesday – More on Borders

I hope you got to see my live Facebook Tips & Techniques last week. If you didn’t, it is on my Wendt Quilting Facebook page under videos. Today, I want to continue my thoughts on borders and quilts without borders.

Some quilts are focused on repeat blocks all over.  Some look good with borders and others don’t necessarily need any.  I think Diamond Tipped Tools is one of those.

Diamond Tipped Tools – Brights

#1 – Some quilts don’t need borders!

A good rule of thumb when adding borders…

#2 – Use a measurement already in the quilt as a guide.  If I have 12″ finished blocks, I often use half of that, 6″ border.

However, in the end, it is what you want and even how much bigger you need to make the quilt.  Adding pieced borders is a great way to add width and length to a quilt.  Audition your ideas!

Around the Block – US Tour – week #2

Today is the second state to be released for the Around the Block – US Tour. Take a look at Alaska!
https://www.appliquesquiltsandmore.com/blog/usa-block-tour-alaska-167945

I had the pleasure of going to Alaska last year on a cruise. I loved it! I have a high school friend who has a tour business in Juneau, Sea Lion Adventure Tours, check them out if you get to Alaska.  Dale and Stacy will take good care of you and help you plan your Alaska adventure memories.   (no affiliation, just great people I support)

Two Tip Tuesday – Scrappy Borders

First, I want to remind you about the block hop, Around the Block – US Tour.  It begins on August 2nd.  It is FREE, so be sure to sign up for notifications or check the website each week for visiting another state block.  (The blocks will be more than the block named for each state.  There are wonderful designers bringing you their own take the state block they are designing.)  click the link to go to the US Tour site.

I’ve shown a few scrappy quilts on my last couple posts and I’ve got another scrappy idea for you to try!  My friend Faye, showed one of her quilts with a scrappy border and the easy way she does it.  Register tape!  YES, all those receipts you get from your purchases or the miles of coupons that some stores spit out and hand to you.  You can piece on them!  Use extra strips, any width and sew one next to the other, trim them up and you have an instant scrappy border strip.  Most receipt tape is 3 1/8″ wide, this will finish to 2 5/8″.   OR you could even add extra width beyond the receipt when you trim if you want a wider border.  The tape will keep it stabilized and it is easy to remove.

Receipt paper piecing

Sew to either side!

This would add great variety of colors for the outside of any scrappy quilt.  You could even keep it to specific colors in the quilt.  I can see many possibilities.  How about crazy or wonky pieces?  Or skinny and fat strips?  The list can goes on….or should I say the receipt goes on.  Faye showed us a roll just waiting for another quilt.

#1 – Save those receipts and start sewing scraps to them!

#2 – Be sure to test the ink with an iron.  Faye found that it doesn’t come off on her fabric, but best to test.

Faye’s Scrappy Quilt!

I love the quilt Faye made with her scrappy receipt border!
