STOP! Don’t hop anywhere…you’ve reached the 5th Notion Commotion….right here!
First, thank you for visiting/hopping around the Notion Commotion! Let me introduce myself. I’m Debbie Wendt owner of Wendt Quilting. (Pronounced “went”, I just love a play on words!) I started my business in 2007 when my binding tool, Brilliant Bindings first hit the market. It was picked up by Checker Distributors the same year! Brilliant Bindings was designed for making bindings with perfect mitered corners and no fuss joining of binding end seams. It has complete color instructions with photos to take you through all the binding steps.

Fast forward to 2014…
Brilliant Bindings has proven to be the best, easiest and most versatile binding tool on the market. Not only can you use it for bindings, it is used as a template in cutting pieces for making quilts, a marking tool in constructing mitered borders, handy square up for blocks up to 2″ unfinished, marking 1/4″ sewing lines and the 45 degree edge is a great “wooden iron”.
Brilliant Bindings is not limited to one binding width. The tool is 3″ wide so it can easily accommodate most bindings we use. If a binding is wider than 3″, you can turn the tool to accommodate wider bindings. The next two photos below show how to use Brilliant Bindings to finish the binding tail ends. The first is Brilliant Bindings on a 2 1/4″ wide double fold binding and then on a wider faux piped binding.
The quarter inch lines on Brilliant Bindings also allow the tool to be placed on strips and used as a template for many quilt designs! Works well with “jelly rolls” 2 1/2″ strips, 3″ strips, and even charm squares. Any pattern on my website with “Tool” or “Brilliant” in the tile uses Brilliant Bindings as a template for cutting pieces for that pattern. I am excited to introduce the latest pattern released at Spring Market, Twirl-A-Tool, shown at right. This unique block is my original design! Included in Twirl-A-Tool is directions for a faux piped binding!
I’m also excited to share Brilliant Bindings video demo. You can view it from the homepage of my website. Click here to go directly to the video.
Be sure to checkout the free patterns on the website. One freebie is directions on how to “Create Mitered Borders using Brilliant Bindings tool.” Yes, indeed for mitered borders!
If you leave a comment below you’ll be entered into a drawing for a Brilliant Bindings tool (1/8″ thick for ALL quilters) and Twirl-A-Tool pattern. I’m doing a second drawing for joining my e-mail/website newsletter. Sign up on Wendt Quilting. The newsletter winner will get to choose which “tool” or “brilliant” pattern they want to go with a Brilliant Bindings tool for ALL quilters. That makes two chances to win! And a bonus…(but wait there’s more- I just had to say that!)…yep, a third…if you are longarm quilter, please say so in your comment on my blog and you’ll be entered into a third drawing for the 1/4″ thick Longarm version of Brilliant Bindings tool. The longarm version is 1/4″ thick for use with your longarm and has complete color instructions for binding your quilts before you remove them from the frame. It also includes domestic machine instructions.
Cool tool giveaways for hot summer days and nights! Wendt Quilting winners will be drawn and announced on Friday July 18th after the last notion. Enjoy the commotion!

Needing to focus on my blog is an understatement! I feel like Scarlet O’Hara…”Scarlett: I can’t think about that right now. If I do, I’ll go crazy. I’ll think about that tomorrow. ” And tomorrow came two years later. So, I’m back to it ready to step back into blog land.
I’ve published several new patterns in the last two years, 10 to be exact. Take a look on my website at wendtquilting.com. The latest pattern just released at Spring Market is Twirl-A-Tool.

Look at that shape! It is Brilliant Bindings! Yes, your “Brilliant Bindings” tool can be used for more than perfect bindings! Most of the new patterns use Brilliant Bindings as a template! Look for “tool” or “brilliant” in the title.
Another recent pattern addition is iPad Pyramid Pillow. Perfect to hold those tablets! Each side is a different angle and the tablet can be held in portrait or landscape orientation. These make great presents!

See you on the website or right back here! Getting ready for Notion Commotion, it starts tomorrow…check it out!
Last year I found a video associated with the Heirloom Creations’ Blog about this FAST, FUN Quilt. They actually had jelly roll races to see who could finish the quilt first. It is a great concept and a very quick method of getting a quilt done fast! A friend, Diane, and I used their technique for our guild’s workshop on Jan. 7th. With 12 participants we had 8 completely finish their quilt tops in the workshop. The only reason the others didn’t finish was due to late starts, early to leave and a need to iron each seam.
I have made three so far and have two more cut and ready to stitch!
The quilt on the left is Diane’s made from a Bali Pop. The other two are mine. The Red, White and Black on the right is from a Tiki Roll sold by SewBatik. The middle quilt is from a jelly roll I purchesed over the holidays. To change things up I used straight seams instead of the usual diagonal as per original instructions. I think both methods are great and some fabrics lend themselves to a straight seam.
Below are the photos of the beginning piles of strips to their finished quits. For fun we took Sylvia’s beginning strip across the room to see how long it really was, the length of the basketball court and back again!! (A bit blurry, as it was a quick shot trying to keep it off the floor.)
June was the first one done!
Vivian’s looked like a sunset!
Nancy and several others chose to keep an accordian stack of the strip for the first LONG seam.

Jane loves reproduction fabrics. We love the look and it shows how any personality of fabric works!
Sue’s Red/White/Blue is wonderful!

Edna got a wonderful surprise with how her brights really came together!
Carol G’s brights are beautiful!
And Carol V’s gradated strips gave an amazing effect, without any pre-planning!

Margaret added borders after she got home, in time for show and tell at our meeting! (exact same Tiki roll as mine shown in the beginning, she kept the order of the roll with repeat strips together)
We are looking forward to seeing how Bea, Sylvia and Helen’s come together!
You can find instructions on Heirloom Creations’ Blog or my version HERE!
Enjoy and get strippin’!
Greeting from middle England, a favorite spot enjoying quilting friends and countryside. Today I’m miles from home. I’ve made the trip to England so I can attend the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham. The most important part of the trip is to visit friends! AND see the Egyptian Tentmaker’s Display at the show.
I love the conservation of old buildings, so it is a treat to be at the Old School House, built in 1830 but the rest is even older and where “my” room is, built in 1640.
A treat of Egyptian Tentmaker’s Applique was at the foot of my bed as Barbara and I share a love of Egypt and Tentmakers.
A special exhibit of The Tentmaker’s of Old Cairo was a huge success at the show. It made me smile to watch the show go-ers pack into the exhibit. There were two tentmakers working on their beautiful applique work. It was good to see them as we recognized each other from my days of living and shopping in Cairo. The first photo below is of Tarek busy on a Red Sea piece and the second is Hosam working on a traditional piece.
I’ll be sad to go home, but duty calls and in a few days you will find me teaching and exhibiting at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival.
