Two Tip Tuesday – Jelly Roll Rug

Last week I talked about making a jelly roll rug.

Jelly Roll Rug! D.W.

I’m loving the colors!  I used the pattern by Roma Lambson of RJ Designs.  40 jelly roll strips (2 1/2″ strips) were used.  I had a 24 pack of strips, plus cut and added 16 strips from my stash.  Need 2 1/2″ strips?  Yes, you can cut your own…tip #1!

Or purchase pre-cut strips.  There are some wonderful color combinations put together already for you!  A “jelly roll” was first introduced to the quilt world by Moda Fabrics.  Many fabric companies have their own set of 2 1/2″ strips.  Look for them in a local quilt shop near you!

I was in Charleston, SC for the AQS Quilt Week last week.  Here is a photo of my booth!  (before the “big” lights were turned on)

It was great to be in Charleston and thank you to all who came by my booth, shopped and came to the Learning Center for my talk on Hexies!  My friend Carol went with me to the show.  We had fun sightseeing the day after the show ended!  See the sights and learn the history of these wonderful town where quilt shows are held…tip #2!!

Two Tip Tuesday – Charleston and tips

I’m in Charleston, SC for the AQS Quilt Week! My booth is set up and ready for the opening of the show tomorrow.  Come say hi and see the demos in booth #1303. There is a clip on the AQS Blog yesterday about my tools and Learning Center session!  Scroll down to find my post.  https://www.facebook.com/AQSonline/

Tips for today will be short and sweet.   I’ve been working on a jelly roll rug!  FUN!  Try out the new “Jelly Roll Jig” it is a great tool for helping fold the batting and strips for sewing.

#1 – Jelly Roll Jig!  at www. hipstitchabq.com (remove spaces)

#2 – Patience is a virtue when sewing jelly roll rug…and Best Press, it is your friend!

The rug photo will have to be next week.  (photo won’t load correctly, bummer!)  I’ll be teaching it at the Blackstone Valley Heritage Quilters Workshop on Dec. 7th.  Won’t you join me?!?

A photo that would load…My new larger Boxy Bag is shown below.  A new favorite with Turtle Hand Batik fabrics.  (they are here at the show as well, hint! hint!)

Two Tip Tuesday – EPP

I was pondering what two tips to give today and then I saw that AQS posted the video I did while at the Grand Rapids show last month. So, voila! The tips can be found in the video!

English Paper Piecing (EPP) is a fun and a take along hand project.  I have been sewing Hexies this way for many years as I have written about before.  Enjoy the video!

Two Tip Tuesday – Maine Getaway

I was in Maine at my Thimble Pleasures Guild’s Getaway this past weekend. I had a wonderful time and got a LOT of piecing done! We were in Kennybunk!  It is a beautiful area with the shore just a short walk up the road for the Franciscan House, where we held the Getaway.  Look at my view one afternoon…

Beach in Maine

And the flowers were still in full bloom!  Walk in the opposite direction and there were wonderful restaurants and cute little shops.  I managed to have lobster two nights!  YUM!

Still in bloom in Maine!

I forgot to pack my thread holder for my large spools.  So, my solution (actually how I usually sew with a large spool) put it on the floor.  It allows the thread to unwind off the spool and not get hung up for smooth sewing.

The floor is my spool pin!

#1 – For large spools of thread, place on the floor and run the thread up to the spool pin and thread as normal!  No thread stand needed.

Another tip…also happened on this trip…When you don’t want to mark with a marker or chalk, try a Hera Marker.  It has a smooth curved edge that will crease the fabric.  Run it along a ruler for a nice straight line to use as a quilting guide.  Quick and easy for cross hatching!  Thank Patty for the use of your project (and hands) for my photos!

Using a Hera Marker

Hera marker and crease it makes!

#2 – Try a Hera Marker when you don’t want to have to remove chalk or fabric marker from your project.  Mark a crease, follow for your quilting line.  NO removal necessary!

I’m already looking forward to my next Getaway next year!  Do you attend Getaways or Retreats?  I sure enjoy them!!

Two Tip Tuesday – To wash or not to wash?

Today’s title has been debated over and over again. My opinion is based on the fabric you are working with. Typically, I don’t pre-wash most printed fabric (unless they are DARK).  There are certain fabrics I usually always pre-wash…Batiks!! Especially if they are highly saturated in color. Take the fabric below, this actually photo-ed a bit lighter…

Purple Batik

I pre-washed and so glad I did! Many batiks are hand dyed and need have the excess color/dye in them. I used “Shout Color Catchers” by SC Johnson.  I put two Color Catchers in the first washing with a little laundry detergent and warm water.  See how they came out below.  I repeated with a second wash, the second sheets in the photo.

Color Catchers
1st wash + 2nd wash

The results show just why it is a good idea to pre-wash!  I stopped with two washings, but be aware some fabrics might need more.  There are several products on the market for treating dyed fabrics.  “Retayne” and “Synthrapol” are two I have used.  another way to test is put the fabric in a sink with water.  Lift out of the water and see if there is dye in the water.  If there is…pre-wash!!

#1- Test fabric for color fastness!

#2- “Color Catcher” sheets is one way to “catch” the dye from the wash water.

Two Tip Tuesday – Thank you Grand Rapids AQS Quilt Week

It was great week in Grand Rapids for AQS Quilt Week! As I mentioned on my FB page, all three of my classes SOLD OUT! I taught a variety of classes from handwork of the English Paper Piecing “Hexies and Honeycombs”, to “Become a Brilliant Binder” and finally “Twirl-A-Tool” (using Brilliant Bindings as a cutting template for this quilt pattern! I was excited for all the great work by my students! Many samples were stitched in class! My phone was in the booth so no photos, but trust me, great results of Flower Gardens, Binding samples and Twirl blocks were finished in class!!!

My booth had a little smaller footprint but we managed to get a load of samples for everyone to choose from. Thank you to all my customers and their patience when the devices didn’t talk to each other. (a bit of a vendor nightmare but switching to two devices did the trick)

Two Tip Tuesday – Hexies and Hello Grand Rapids

Well, a two day drive and two day set up and ready for a four day show. Hello Grand Rapids!!! I’ll be teaching three classes, only one spot left in Twirl-A-Tool. Brilliant Bindings and Hexies and Honeycombs are both sold out!! I’m one happy girl and can’t wait for the show to open. I’m in booth #1021. Come by and say HI! Cheryl and I will be doing demos on Brilliant Bindings and Hex-a-ma-jig and Jr! I managed to get 30+ quilts up in the booth. Loads of eye candy and the tools and patterns to make them!
I’ll post pictures in the next couple days of the booth.

I received a wonderful photo of a Hexie tablerunner from a happy customer!  Sally Cottrell of All Occasions Quilting in Timberlake, NC made this beautiful tablerunner for her new table.  I LOVE it!!  She used Hex-a-ma-jig (Two Halves make a Whole) and these wonderful fall fabrics leftover from another project.  Thank you for sharing Sally!

Tips are short and sweet today…
Sweet…#1- pack snacks! Chocolate is preferred and share with your quilty friends!
Short…#2- Don’t be short in cutting strips! Double check that you are straight (at right angles to the fold) when cutting strips for NO “V” cuts. I check to see that I am straight about every fourth or fifth cut.

Straight Cuts!

Check that the fold in at right
angles to the ruler lines!

The strips I cut are for my Brilliant Bindings class, no “V” cuts allowed!

Two Tip Tuesday – Summer Fun

Hot day in New England and I go to Mystic Aquarium with a dear young friend! See… there is a Beluga Whale swimming behind me!

Beluga at Mystic Aquarium

Reminds me of a pattern…wink, wink…Snuggle Tails – Whale/Dolphin.

Did you know the pattern has 5 different tail shapes?  A dolphin, humpback whale, blue whale, beluga and orca.

It is a fun pattern, sure to please the young and young at heart!

#1- Inspiration is all around, an aquarium, garden, tile floor…be inspired!

AQS Quilt Week in Grand Rapids starts next week on Wednesday.  Will you be there?  Twirl-A-Tool had a spot open up, go quickly and sign up!  It is a great block, that looks fun in many different fabrics.  Come by my booth #1021 and see demos and new patterns since last year.

I’m heading to Springfield, MA tomorrow to help hang quilts at the Mancuso show.  I’ll have a quilt hanging in the guild section.  My Tasket Basket Quilt from the Hop Around Festival will be there.  I love this quilt and the gorgeous “Something Blue” fabrics by Edyta Sitar.

Two Tip Tuesday – Ouch!

So, I begin my tips today with what NOT to do!!!

Warning: this is not for weak stomach, no worries, no blood!

Yep, that would be my thumb. I think I’ve only done this one other time in my 40+ years of sewing. Thank goodness it didn’t go all the way through, only grazed the end of the thumb. Well, it did go through the nail.

Needle through thumbnail

#1 – Always know where your fingers are when sewing!

I never, well until the other night, have my thumb close to the needle. It is always in front of the presser foot. I have no clue what happened, it just happened!

Onto a tip of DO not don’t!

When Squaring a block, be sure it is centered! I teach squaring a block in many of my classes. There are several things to check before you put your cutter to fabric. The photo shows one tip…
know the center measurement of your block. Find the center of the block and place the center measurement on that center point.

Then square around all four sides of the block. It might be necessary to square two sides, rotate the ruler and square the opposite two sides.

#2- Find the center measurement of the block and place it on the center of the block.

If I have a number of blocks with the same measurement, I will draw a circle around the center measurement.  This way my eye goes straight to the middle and it is easier to locate on the ruler.  I use a sharpie to mark center.  It comes off easily with an alcohol wipe!

Two Tip Tuesday – heat is on

Is it hot or cool where you are? What is your summer project?  Or do you have several?  I’m playing catch up! I’ve spent the last couple months being away from home more than at home. Now, to get ready for the next 4 shows to finish the year. AQS Quilt Week in Grand Rapids is next! August 21-24. I’ll be teaching “Become a Brilliant Binder”, “Twirl-A-Tool” and “Hexies and Honeycombs- Getting Started with English Paper Piecing”. Bindings is sold out and there is only one or two seats left in the other two. Be sure to sign up soon to guarantee a spot for you in class. I will also be an instructor for All-Star Review.  This is a great chance to see several instructors in one spot!  It is a great show.  I love all the guild challenge quilts.  My booth, #1021, will be on the corner near those quilts!!  Hope to see you there.

Also happening right now is the “Teal Mini Swap” sign ups by Beth Helfter of Eva Paige Quilt Designs.  Limited space, so hurry on over to register.  I need to do the same.  It is a great fundraiser for raising awareness of ovarian cancer and Ovarian Cancer Research.  https://evapaigequilts.com  Who knows, we could be swap partners!

#1 – Join a swap!  Meet new quilting friends!

So, I did change my color palette for the project I showed a couple weeks ago.

I’m happier with the contrast of the aqua/green with the background.

Enough contrast? D.W.

Change of color!

#2 – It pays to make a change if you are not sure…you will be happier and not keep questioning your decision!

HA!  I made the change!

Debbie
